Low to mid-tiered Chinese mobile phones manufactured with Chinese chipsets are attractive to criminals and inmates due to their compact size, cheap price and lack of traceability. These non-standard Chinese phones such as MTK, Spreadtrum, as well as other unbranded devices, can be conveniently purchased off the shelf at a local neighborhood kiosk or electronic store.
As these mobile devices are easy to hide and dispose of, organized gangs and bad actors leverage them to conduct illicit activities. For examiners trying to perform digital forensics, the lack of manufacturing standards for these phones has presented major challenges in evidence extraction.
Register for the Cellebrite UFED CHINEX webinar “Getting the most out of Chinese and nonstandard phones”, to find out how you can overcome digital forensics challenges through forensically sound methods. This webinar will also cover:
- Insight into the Chinese Phone market in India
- Different kinds of standardized and non-standardized phones
- Where to use the right solution
- Using Chinex toolkit optimally – A ‘How-To’ document for Chinex will be shared with the audience post webinar
Challenges extracting data from Non-standard Chinese phones
As mobile vendors continue to launch new devices on a regular basis, Cellebrite invests heavily in research and development to provide our valued customers with cutting edge capabilities to extract maximum data from the widest of devices and applications.
Cellebrite supports more than 28,000 devices and works to expand this support on an ongoing basis through periodic release updates. These updates are available to customers with an active license to help gain access to devices that may not have been supported in a previous version.
UFED CHINEX Add-on
The UFED CHINEX is an add-on option to the existing UFED Ultimate license, that was developed specifically to help perform physical and logical extractions of digital data and passwords from non-standard phones in a forensically sound manner.
As Chinese phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and others, have standard configurations with recognized chipsets and OS versions, the UFED CHINEX Kit, should NOT BE USED to extract data from these phones. The UFED 4PC or UFED Touch/Touch2 solution are still meant for this purpose.
For information on how to operate the solution, refer to the Quick Start Guide.
Note: If you are a Cellebrite customer having trouble detecting Chinese phones, please verify the device vendor. As mentioned above, the UFED CHINEX cannot be used on Chinese phones from vendors such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus etc.
Extracting data from a XIAOMI MI5 phone
To extract data from these phones, UFED 4PC or UFED Touch/Touch2 devices must still be used. Once the phone is connected, it will be auto detected. When the phone is recognized, proceed with the relevant extraction method. If the phone has not been detected automatically, go to the phone list, and manually select the make and model of the device and proceed with the relevant extraction method. Alternatively, the generic extraction methods can be leveraged.
